Wrapping young trees for winter

If you have not wrapped your newly landscaped trees for the winter, this weekend may be a good time as the temperatures will be in the mid to high 50’s!

Why wrap your newly planted trees? This is mostly important for trees exposed to long periods of sunlight during the winter months. The heat from the sun may cause parts of the tree to thaw and want to grow – which may split bark leaving an unsightly wound which will later deform – if not die back. Wrapping a tree from the ground up will also help keep rodents and mammals from feeding and disfiguring the lower portions of the tree.

Tree wrap can be purchased from most home improvement stores, ideally you want a wrap with a white side to face out & reflect the sunlight off the trunk. When wrapping, follow the directions on the package making sure to overlap the cloth.
